A Win for Environmental Education
Released: June 26, 2007
SEEAL (the Southeastern Environmental Education Alliance) has
been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Henry H. Crapo Foundation
in New Bedford, MA. The grant is intended to support SEEAL’s
first paid coordinator.
SEEAL, a program fund of the Community Foundation of Southeastern
Massachusetts, (CFSEMA), was formed in 1997 to promote collaboration
among organizations that are involved in environmental education.
Today, SEEAL counts more than 50 regional partner organizations,
including service agencies, community groups, nonprofits, and
public, charter and vocational schools, colleges, and universities.
Some of its lead partners include The Trustees of Reservations,
UMass Dartmouth, Fairhaven Public Schools, Lloyd Center for the
Environment, and Westport River Watershed Alliance.
SEEAL acts as an umbrella organization, applying for and providing
grants to local non-profits and organizations who provide environmental
education in Southeastern Massachusetts with CFSEMA acting as
its fiscal agent. Since its inception, SEEAL has managed over
$1.5 million in environmental education programs for the region.
In 2002, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts recognized SEEAL’s
environmental alliance as the model for the future of regional
environmental alliances across the Commonwealth.
This coordinator position will help SEEAL develop organizational
and operational infrastructure. The coordinator will be charged
with securing and distributing funds to SEEAL’s partners
and building SEEAL as an organization.
“We hope to get funding to secure the coordinator position
for two years so that we can comfortably get to work applying
for grants for the partnership as a whole, and ultimately for
regional environmental education programming and resources,”
says Jennifer Marshall, SEEAL Coordinator.
If you are interested in learning more about SEEAL, want to get
involved and/or make a donation, please contact 508-493-4343 or
jmarshall@seeal.org.
SEEAL’s mission is to encourage environmental awareness
and stewardship in Southeastern Massachusetts. CFSEMA’s
mission is to improve and protect the quality of life in the Southeastern
Massachusetts regions.
